It works in VESA!

Nothing like VESA. At 1024x768, who could be happier?

Oh. I know. Anyone with a higher resolution, graphics acceleration, and compiz.

Here's the working xorg.conf. It should be setup so that once the system is configured to actually use fglrx, you just switch "fglrx" out with "VESA" in the driver selection line:
